Five programmes based on the journals of Jeremiah Goldswain
Adapted and introduced by Anthony Delius
Reader, Bernard Miles
4-' Foul-Weather Friends '
Jeremiah Goldswain was a sawyer who left Great Marlow at the age of seventeen to become one of the ' 1820 Settlers' in the Eastern Cape. For nearly forty years he kept a record of the trials and surprises of that first generation in Africa; and his gusto and humour were as tenacious as his Buckinghamshire speech.
In this programme Goldswain struggles to continue his farming while serving on patrols and in skirmishes against marauding hordes of Bantu warrioIs-and angers his fellow settlers by launching out as a trader as well.
The journals were edited by Una Long , and published by the Van Riebeeck Society of South Africa.

UFAW was founded by two students, but now has branches in ten British universities, 1,500 scientific and university members, and nearly 5,000 associate members and subscribers. Its main object is to enlist the services of scientists and other professional people and of students in promoting kindness to animals and to carry out scientific investigations for their benefit.
UFAW has applied scientific knowledge to the prevention of suffering in connection with the cruel gin trap, wrong methods of electrocuting dogs, the painful disease of foot-rot in sheep, the cruelty entailed in whaling, etc. UFAW is also leading a movement among working scientists for eliminating or reducing suffering in animals used for experiment.

Hubert's case comes up, and he is committed to prison pending a warrant for trial from the Secretary of State.
The family goes into conference to save Hubert, and it is decided to put Alan's and Jean's plan into action. Dinny helps by pawning some jewellery, and arranging to have Hubert's diary published so that the Home Secretary should see it and perhaps this will prevent him from issuing a warrant. Michael Mont helps her. Bobbie Ferrar is to be called in to influence the Home Secretary. Dinny remains a ' Maid in Waiting.'
