Sergeant Cuff has interested himself again in the disappearance of the moonstone, and on his advice Franklin Blake has demanded from Rachel Verinder an explanation of her hostile attitude towards him. She tells him that she saw him steal the diamond on the night of her birthday party. Tortured by her taunts of dishonesty and treachery, Franklin Blake seeks to establish his innocence.
From Ezra Jennings, assistant to Dr. Candy, who was present at the party, Blake learns that he was the victim of a trick and that his wine was drugged with opium To prove to Rachel Verinder that he was unconscious of his actions in stealing the diamond that night, Jennings suggests that Blake should submit himself to an experiment and under the influence of opium, and before witnesses, steal the moonstone for the second time.
