In May 1834 Thomas Carlyle and his wife moved into a house in Cheyne Row, Chelsea. It was pleasantly placed. with green fields behind it and a view of the Thames, but as time went on the snags began to appear. Julia Green wood talks about the life of Carlyle and his wife in. Chelsea, and of some of the trials they met with, including the ' bogues,' damp, stopped-up drains, and above all, the noise.
