Edmond Dantes , the young sailor who was falsely imprisoned in the Chateau d'If, has escaped, and has found the huge treasure whose secret was bequeathed to him by his fellow prisoner, the Abbe Faria. After his education by the aged Abbe, Dantes can speak perfect English and Italian, and can pass as a nobleman in the highest society.
He returns to Marseilles to find his father has died of starvation, and his benefactor, M. Morrel , is on the verge of ruin. His sweetheart, married to one of his betrayers, has gone to Paris. His other two betrayers are also in Paris, having become rich and famous. Dantes is now bent on revenge.
