2—'The Betrothal Feast'
Produced by Peter Watts
When the captain of the schooner Pharaon dies at sea the young mate, Edmond Dantes, takes over command. He also, unwittingly; becomes responsible for a letter from Napoleon on Elba to the Bonapartists in Paris. He brings the ship safely home to Marseilles, where M. Morrel, the owner, promises him the command of the Pharaon, but Danglars, the supercargo, is jealous.
Edmond is overjoyed to return to his old father, and his sweetheart Mercedes. But here too he has a rival, for Fernand Mondego, a fisherman, also loves the beautiful Catalan girl. Danglars, seizing his opportunity, inveigles Fernand into sending a letter to the authorities denouncing Edmond as a Bonapartist agent.
