3—' Wings of Youth '
After three years in the preparatory school at Tercanbury Philip Carey gains a scholarship to the main school. The Headmaster hopes that he will go on to Oxford and become ordained, but Philip does not want to do this. His friend, Herbert Lawson , is leaving at the end of the Christmas term, to study languages in Heidelberg, and Philip decides that he would like to go too.
His uncle and guardian,
Rev. William Carey , is against this idea, but Philip eventually gets his way, and he and Lawson set off for Heidelberg. In the train they meet Wharton, who coaches some of the Professor's pupils, and who tells them something of the life in Heidelberg. They arrive on an afternoon of dazzling spring sunshine, and have the feeling that they are tasting life for the first time.
