On the morning of the case brought by Soames Forsyte , the Man of Property, against Philip Bosinney , architect and designer of Soames's country house, it is discovered that Philip is not in court. The case continues, and judgment is given for the plaintiff, with costs.
In slightly softened mood Soames makes his way home determined to try to make a fresh start with his wife, Irene, who is carrying on an 'affair' with Philip although he is already engaged to June. When Soames reaches home, however, he discovers to his horror and chagrin that his wife has flown, leaving no message.

C.B.E., M.C.

It was also the base for attacking enemy shipping on its way to Greece, and provided a smoke screen designed to confuse the Germans as to the precise point at which Europe was to be invaded.
