Encouraged by his friend Lady Laura Standish, Phineas has resolved to remain in Parliament. He is, he feels sure. in love with Lady Laura; his great ambition now is to win her hand in marriage; and poor little Mary Flood Jones is already almost forgotten. That dull prig, the millionaire Mr. Kennedy, is his rival for Lady Laura's favours, but Phineas cannot believe that she will ever consider such a suitor seriously.
Anxious to rescue her fierce rebellious brother, Lord Chiltern, from his present wasteful way of living, Lady Laura has introduced him to Phineas and asked him to use his good influence. Chiltern hae proposed to Miss Violet Effingham, that lively attractive young heiress with whom he has been in love since childhood. But Violet has declared that &he will never marry him.
