It is July 1806, and Zucconi, an escaped prisoner of the British, has forced Polly and Oliver to leave a pirate ship with him just before she is captured by a British man-of-war. They are rowed to the nearby shore of Italy and, bound hand and fool, are thrust into an old ruined fort. Sergeant Trott and Private Pilchard see them as they land and set off in pursuit from H.M.S.
