Drummer Oliver Crow is sailing from Sicily for Gibrallar in the year 1806, as one of the escort for the prisoner Zucconi, a bandit chief. With Oliver are Ensign Boscawen, Sergeant Trott, Private Pilchard, and, after Mowing away on board, Oliver's cousin Polly Trott. In a storm the ship founders and she is abandoned, but as the boat is swung out Oliver remembers that Zucconi has been left behind. He leaps back on to the sinking ship to rescue the prisoner.
