(Leader, Paul Beard)
Conducted by Rudolf Schwarz
Voice in the Wilderness ' belongs to the period when Bloch was living in Europe, in between his two lengthy sojourns in America: it was completed at Chatel, in the Haute Savoie, in January 1936. Like his other and better-known composition for cello and orchestra, the Hebrew Rhap sody ' Schelomo ' (written some twenty years before), it draws its inspiration from the Bible, and it has been described by the American critic, Dika Newlin , as a ' spiritual successor ' of the earlier work. There are six sections, in each of which there is an important introduction for the orchestra before the solo instrument is introduced. Deryck Cooke
