by Edward Hyams
2 — ' The House and the People'
The speaker was once a Londoner. After the war he and his wife decided to settle in the country and, starting with only a dilapidated cottage and two acres of overgrown land, they made themselves a new home and a new life. In the second of two talks Edward Hyams describes what kind of life they found.

Sonata in F, Op. 99 played by Florence Hooton (cello)
Ross Pratt (piano)
' Master, I can't hear myself at all,' complained one poor cellist whom Brahms was accompanying. ' Lucky for you,' barked the composer. Sympathy should be given to the cellist, for in this work Brahms expects more and different things from the player than anyone had done up to its date, 1886. Legato cross-string playing, pizzicato glissahdi, and remote keys, added to an extreme terseness of expression all imply the highest degree of musicianship and technical facility. 7. H. Davits
