Sonata in F, Op. 99 played by Florence Hooton (cello)
Ross Pratt (piano)
' Master, I can't hear myself at all,' complained one poor cellist whom Brahms was accompanying. ' Lucky for you,' barked the composer. Sympathy should be given to the cellist, for in this work Brahms expects more and different things from the player than anyone had done up to its date, 1886. Legato cross-string playing, pizzicato glissahdi, and remote keys, added to an extreme terseness of expression all imply the highest degree of musicianship and technical facility. 7. H. Davits
