A London Symphony played by the BBC Northern Orchestra
Conductor, Charles Groves
In the course of this work characteristic London sounds are heard-the Westminster chimes, the cry of the lavender seller-but these are merely incidental, and the Symphony as a whole is a poetical evocation of the life of the city, rather than a piece of descriptive music. Although it was afterwards revised, in its original form the Symphony dates from 1912-13. Its four movements, conjuring up various aspects of the city, are framed by a quiet Prologue and Epilogue.
