The Newer Microscopy by J. T. Randall , F.R.S.
Wheatstone Professor of Physics in the University of London
Scientists are deeply interested in the molecular patterns that make up all forms of matter but are too small to be resolved by the light microscope. The development of the electron microscope, with its effective resolving power a hundred times greater than the light microscope, has made the systematic study of these sub-microscopic structures possible.
But the newer microscopy is not by any means confined to this field. Improvements in visible-light microscopes, and the development of mirror microscopes fcr the ultra-violet and infra-red regions of the spectrum, also foreshadow the coming of much valuable new knowledge.
