D'Indy's symphonic variations 'Istar' is based on the" sixth Canto of ' The Epic of Izdubar ', a story taken from one of the Babylonian chronicles. D'Indy has prefaced his score with part of the poem, which tells how Istar, the Goddess of Love, seeks her lover in the land of the dead. In order to reach him she must pass through seven gStes, at each of which she must give up some of her jewels. until finally she stands naked. Thus she delivers her lover, the Son of Life. The composer himself says of this work : ' I have imagined in accordance with this programme a succession of seven variations which become gradually simplified, as if doffing fragments of clothing or adornment and revealing at the close the theme which is given out in unison, that is to say in nudity, by the full orchestra
