' The Read to the Isles ' : talk by Compton Mackenzie
There is probably no more famous and certainly no more beautiful road in the whole of the British Isles than the winding way that leads from Fort William, through Glenfinnan, past little Loch Eilt, with its pine-crowned islands, and on by the silver sands of Morar, to the little fishing town of Mallaig which faces the glory of the Western Isles.
Down this interesting road came Prince
Charlie when he landed to gather the clans around him for his abortive expedition. Every mile of the way is rich in memory and tradition, and there is certainly no one better qualified to pay enthusiastic homage to this loveliest of ,highways than Compton Mackenzie. A man who has always loved islands, he now lives on lonely Barra in the Outer Hebrides.
