Sullivan's cantata The Golden Legend was first performed at the Leeds Festival in 1886, where it had an immediate and outstanding success. The libretto is a condensed version made by Joseph Bennett of Longfellow's poem, and tells the story Df the young Prince Henry who can be cured of a mysterious malady only by a maiden willing to die for his sake. Lucifer has a big hand in the plot, appearing first as a Friar and then as Brother Angelo , a monk with medical skill.

Programme in honour of the House of Commons.
Written and produced by Louis MacNeice
Exactly a year ago today the Debating Chamber of the House of Commons was destroyed by enemy action. Tonight's programme is to commemorate, not so much that tragic event, but the long history of free debate that preceded it, and which still continues in the contemporary British scene. Here is a dramatic reminder that the 'Mother of Parliaments' is the protector and protagonist of freedom.
Throughout the programme you will hear dramatised scenes from the long story of the English Parliament, and, naturally enough, some of the more noteworthy utterances of great Parliamentarians of history.
