Quartet in B flat, Op. 18, No. 6, played by the Catterall String Quartet : Arthur Catterall (violin) ; Audrey Catterall (violin) ; Lena Wood (viola) ; Johan Hock (cello)
It was not until the age of twenty-nine that Beethoven attempted to compose in the form of the string quartet. The Six Quartets that make up Op. 18 are slight in structure and design as compared with the noble quartets of his middle period and the great string quartets which were among the last things he wrote, these first six are full of melody, and all are so clear in form -.is to be easily followed and enjoyed.

played by the BBC Orchestra, conducted by Clarence Raybould
Ravel first wrote the ' Mother Goose ' suite for piano duet and later used the music for a ballet founded on fairy tales, three of which are familiar to most of us. The music illustrates in a very vivid way the cunning with which Ravel uses his orchestral instruments to give just the impression which he has in mind ; it betrays, too, the merry sense of humour which is his.
There are five movements, all of them such deft illustrations of the little stories that no more guidance to the music is needed than the several titles.

Fairy-tale for radio based on the poem by Alexander Ptishkin. Music composed by Alan Rawsthorne and played by the BBC Northern Orchestra, under the direction of the composer. Script and production by Francis Dillon
Like Rimsky-Korsakov 's famous opera Le Coq D'Or, this radio play with music is based on Pushkin's fantastic fairy tale satirising the pomp and stupidiry of autocracy An astrologer presents the aged King Dodon with a Golden Cockerel which will give warning of coming danger. The King promises the astrologer anything he wants. But when the former returns from the war bringing the lovely Queen of Chemakha as his bride, he is furious when the astrologer demands the Queen as his reward.
He kills the astrologer, but is struck senseless by the Golden Cockerel, and the whole kingdom disappears in a clap of thunder.
