The first conductor was Sir George Henschel.
The BBC Scottish Orchestra was formed in 1935 by its present conductor, Ian Whyte. Since the war a number of its younger members have joined the Army and their places have been filled by members of the BBC Northern Ireland Orchestra, which had to be disbanded.
