Scottish Orchestra
BBC Scottish Orchestra
The combined orchestras conducted by Sir Adrian Boult
From a Scottish theatre
This is the first time that these two famous orchestras have combined to give a concert. The Scottish Orchestra dates back to 1891, when it was formed for the purpose of organising and maintaining on a permanent basis a first-class orchestra that would he available for concerts throughout Scotland. The first conductor was Sir George Henschel.
The BBC Scottish Orchestra was formed in 1935 by its present conductor, Ian Whyte. Since the war a number of its younger members have joined the Army and their places have been filled by members of the BBC Northern Ireland Orchestra, which had to be disbanded.
