Trio in E flat, Op. 40, for violin, horn, and piano played by Arthur Catterall (violin)
Alfred J. Cursue (horn)
R. J. Forbes (piano)
Brahms's Trio for piano, violin, and horn, was published in 1868 and therefore represents the composer in his full maturity. It is indeed a magnificent work and a fine feat of ensemble writing, for the blending of these three such varied instruments is accomplished with perfect balance and sonority. The hunting associations of the horn are well displayed in the Scherzo and in the Finale, where the horn is given a leading part.

The scene is on Islayev's estate at the end of the last century
Of the three great Russian novelists of the last century-Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Turgenev — Turgenev was the first to be discovered and acclaimed by Western Europe. Then Tolstoy and, after him, Dostoevsky dawned on the intellectual horizon and fickle intellectuals forgot their earliest love. Admittedly Turgenev lacks the tremendous power and insight of his two great contemporaries, but he has a more delicate, a more poetic touch.
