Trio in E flat, Op. 40, for violin, horn, and piano played by Arthur Catterall (violin)
Alfred J. Cursue (horn)
R. J. Forbes (piano)
Brahms's Trio for piano, violin, and horn, was published in 1868 and therefore represents the composer in his full maturity. It is indeed a magnificent work and a fine feat of ensemble writing, for the blending of these three such varied instruments is accomplished with perfect balance and sonority. The hunting associations of the horn are well displayed in the Scherzo and in the Finale, where the horn is given a leading part.
