Even before the war John Green , who is godfather to ' backyard ' talks, anticipated the need there would be if war broke out for all of us who could to keep some livestock or other to help to grow our own food. The series became an essential of broadcasting once war broke out. Listeners have heard talks on poultry, pigs, rabbits, pigeons, goats. cows, bees, and even fish. And it is hoped that some of the specialists in these subjects who have given such good advice on the keeping of their particular pets will come to the microphone to say something about the past year.
In July, Backyard talks took on a new title-' Backs to the Land '. The year drew to a close with the sad loss of John-Morgan, who had introduced these weekly talks for so long, and had been such an enthusiast for them.

Jean Francaix belongs to the generation of French composers that arose after the last war. He was born at Le Mans in 1912, but later went to Paris, where he studied at the Conservatoire under Nadia Boulanger.
He is one of the most original and gifted of the younger school of French composers. The Quintet, which has been broadcast on more than one occasion, was first heard on the air in a recital by the Philharmonic Ensemble in 1939.

Gordon Jacob 's Passacaglia on a Well-Known Theme needs no more by way of explanation than to point out that it is a series of variations built up on a ground bass, one that runs through the whole series with practically no change from its opening statement. But the variety of colour and interest with which the composer contrives to invest so simple a theme is characteristic of his mastery of the orchestra and his inventive fertility.
