This morning the Rev. James S. Stewart gives the first of a series of three addresses on the fact of Christ, which will be broadcast on successive Sundays. One of the foremost preachers of the Church of Scotland at the present time, Mr. Stewart began his ministry in the Church at Auchterarder. and after a successful charge in Aberdeen he came to Edinburgh five years ago as minister of North Morningside Church.
He held the Cunningham Lectureship in New College, Edinburgh, in 1934 and in 1938 was guest preacher at Montclare, New Jersey ; while in America he also lectured at the Northfield Conference. A book of his sermons, The Gates of New Life', has been published, and, as well as broadcasting several times in religious services, he has taken part anonymously in the early morning religious item ' Lift up your hearts '.

(piano)
One of the greatest composers of modern times is Ernest Bloch. Most of his many works, however, are either for orchestra or chamber music combinations. For the piano he has composed merely a handful of works, including a piano Sonata and his latest work, the Suite for piano ' Visions and prophecies ', to be heard this afternoon.
This work was given its first performance and first broadcast by Harriet Cohen , to whom it is dedicated, during her recent American tour.

5.15 'Michael and the Little
Shoemaker'
A play by Richard Sharp , based on Tolstoy's story ' What men live by', with Eliot Makeham as ' Simon'
An interesting bit of casting is that of Eliot Makeham as Simon, because he took the lead in the film Whqf Men Live By a few years ago. Makeham's latest films are Night Train to Munich and Saloon Bar. He is now a member of the BBC Drama Repertory Company.
5.50 A special appeal by Mac to all Children's Hour listeners to provide funds for the purchase of a mobile X-ray unit

played by Frederick Grinke (violin)
Kendall Taylor (piano)
Sir John McEwen's Sonata-Fantasia in E minor was composed in 1921. It is a melodious but very intellectually conceived work, consisting of two movements—the first grave and reflective, the second vivacious, with an expressive middle section, at the end of which is an alluring little Scottish tune with a drone-like accompaniment.

An appeal on behalf of the- British Legion and the Earl Haig Fund, Scottish Branch, by General Viscount Gort , V.C., G.C.B.
The Remembrance Day Appeal for the British Legion, which the late Earl Haig founded to help his old comrades of the Great War, has now to provide for another generation of ex-Service men. All British Legion schemes of assistance are in future to help ex-Service men of the present war. Thus the British Legion has an even greater dependence on public support to its annual Poppy Day Appeal, the only national appeal for financial help that it tnakes during the course of the year.
£594,000 was given on Remembrance Day, 1939, but in view of the present greater needs it is hoped that a new record total may be reached this year.
Contributions for work in England,
Wales, and Ireland should be addressed to [address removed]. All contributions will be gratefully acknowledged.

by Joseph Conrad
Adapted for broadcasting by Robert Gittings
Produced by Douglas Cleverdon
' The Shadow Line ', like so many of Conrad's stories, is concerned not so much with adventures by sea-though these are exciting enough—as with their effect upon the mind of the man who is involved in them. It tells how the young captain of a sailing ship, on his first command in the Eastern seas, faced an ordeal that carried him across the shadowy border-line which divides care-free youth from full maturity.
