When Sir Arthur Sullivan died in 1900 he was at work on the score of The Emerald Isle, which was to be produced by D'Oyly Carte at the Savoy Theatre. Only two musical numbers out of twenty-six had actually been completed. Sullivan's high opinion of Edward German 's work and the strong recommendation of William Boosey resulted in German's acceptance of a commission to complete the score.
The comic opera was produced in 1901 and Edward German was acclaimed successor to the great Sullivan. In the cast were Walter Passmore , Henry Lytton , Rosina Brandram , Louie Pounds , Agnes Fraser , and Isobel Jay.
