Part 1
God save the King
(Soloist, Eva Turner )
The closing scene of Gotterdammerung is also the end of the ' Ring ' cycle. The body of Siegfried has been set upon a funeral pyre at Briinnhilde's behest, and to some of the most superb music of the cycle she pronounces Siegfried's epitaph and the doom of the gods.
Taking the Ring from Siegfried's finger, she sets fire to the logs, mounts her horse, and leaps with him into the flames. The fire spreads to the heavens and reaches Valhalla, where Wotan, with the gods seated round him, is seen surrounded by the flames that presently destroy them all. The ' Curse ' has been fulfilled.
Eva Turner is one of the few British singers who have won fame abroad in opera. As an unknown English girl, she was engaged to sing at La Scala, Milan. She scored a sensational success as prima donna of an Italian operatic company touring Germany, and won international fame when she sang Turandot at Covent Garden.

An appeal on behalf of the Voluntary Hospitals of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, by the Rt. Hon. the Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, K.G.
The work of the hospitals in this second year of war is in the very front line of our war effort, and it is to remind listeners of the pressing need for continued public support in this effort that Lord Baldwin will be speaking this evening. These hospitals are now, as always, the nerve centre for the treatment of the sick. If they were vital before the war they are doubly vital now in their role of refuge, not only for the victims of the air raids, but also for those who are ailing and cannot be removed to safety.
