Trio No. 3, in E
1 Allegro moderato. 2 Scherzo: Vivace. 3 Andante cantabile. 4 Finale: Con moto played by the Grinke Trio— Frederick Grinke (violin), Florence Hooton (violoncello), Kendall Taylor (pianoforte)
John Ireland's Piano Trio No. 3, in E, first performed on April 4, 1938, is essentially lyrical in character. The first movement is laid out, for the most part, on the usual sonata-form lines. The scherzo is an animated movement with a rhythm of alternating bars of nine-eight and six-eight time. The andante is a fully developed slow movement, and the finale is shorter than the first movement, certain subordinate features of which are used in its structure.
