Bliss's ballet Checkmate was first produced in Paris in June 1937 by the Vic-Wells Ballet , under Constant Lambert, and they gave the first performance in England at Newcastle in September, 1937.
The story is based on the idea of a game of chess between Love and Death. Love is Red, and Death Black. The two items to be heard this evening are taken from a concert suite, which Bliss later arranged from the ballet music. In the ballet the Black Queen plays the rôle of femme fatale and at the end is left in possession of the board. Love has been conquered by Death.

It is curious that so little should be known of the origin of such a masterpiece as Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto. No one can even give its date with certainty. Schindler. who knew Beethoven but is unreliable, says 1804 ; several writers say 1805 (without giving any authority) ; Thayer, greatest of Beethoven scholars, suggests the end of 1806. At any rate, it is certain that the Concerto dates from the period of Fidelia, the Violin Concerto, and the fourth and fifth Symphonies.
The whole work shows Beethoven in his most romantic mood. The dialogue in the slow movement between the strings in unison-harsh and adamantine-and the piano, which replies with some of the loveliest phrases ever written for the instrument, suggested to Schumann the idea of Orpheus pleading with the powers of the underworld for his Eurydice.

It was a happy idea when Stanelli thought of his bachelor party, made a record of it, and played it over to Eric Maschwitz , then Director of Variety, who fell for it at once. That was in 1936. The Bachelor Party was on the air on and off for three years.
The scene is Stanelli's flat ;
