Second of three dark Manhunters dramas exploring tales of beasts eating humans. In this true story from postwar Africa, George Rushby vows to exterminate the man-eating lions that are terrorising Tanzania, but they are unlike any lions he has encountered.
Drama: The Man-Eating Lions of Njombe 9.00pm BBC2
In the second of these animal-themed dramas, a gamekeeper in 1940s Tanganyika (now Tanzania) takes on a pride of lions that have acquired a taste for human flesh. An air of mystery and superstition hangs over the lions because the locals believe they are demons of some kind. There's another mystery, too, as to why the BBC's superb natural history unit has turned its hand to making dramas, instead of sticking to what it's good at.
There's an extraordinary true story here, but it deserves so much better. A decent script, for instance; one that isn't riddled with dud dialogue ("You could have died! What about the children?") and maddening plot holes. Poor Tamzin (Bodies) Malleson, usually excellent, plays the gamekeeper's wife, but it's a nothing role and she can do nothing with it.
Luckily, there's some glorious scenery to revel in and the irresistible tug of a dark, primal story. (DB)
