Rembrandt's withdrawal from a busy and successful life.
"Great artists are not always sorry to become anonymous," he says. The 1640s witnessed both the artist's financial ruin, and the painting of some of his finest portraits, of which the most moving depict women. In these later years, Rembrandt was rescued from bankruptcy by his son Titus and his companion Hendrickje Stoffels , "to whose love and devotion we owe so much".
