The first film in the two-part Swedish epic starring
Liv Ullmann , Max Von Sydow
Jan Troell 's powerful and moving film is a grimly authentic account of the hardships and religious intolerance suffered by Swedish farmers in the mid-19th century which drove many to seek a new home in the vast continent of North America.
The Emigrants begins in Sweden and follows a group of such farmers, led by the Oskar family, on their arduous journey across the Atlantic.

Following directly from The Emigrants, the second part of Jan Troell 's epic about the 19th-century Swedish farmers who settled in North America deals with their struggle in a hostile country. As Karl and Kristina Oskar build a home and family while cultivating their land, Karl's brother Robert journeys to California in search of gold.
