The date: December 12, 1901
Marconi and his assistant, Kemp, sitting in a receiving station on the top of Signal Hill, heard over crude earphones the morse letter S. This was a pre-arranged signal sent from a powerful transmitting station in Cornwall. Marconi's hunch that radio signals could be sent across the Atlantic was confirmed.

Today, we in Great Britain celebrate World Children's Day. Over forty countries have instituted such a day in response to a request of the United Nations to set aside a day of friendship and understanding between children.
Michael Henderson takes you on a round trip to meet some of the children from other nations and introduces Stephen Peet, who retells part of the story of his film, Far Cry, which he made recently in South Korea for the Save the Children Fund.
