6/6. Maverick soul/funk DJ Norman Jay concludes his showcase of classic, forgotten and modern funk recordings from the 50s onwards.
3/4. Stuart Maconie continues a tribute to singer/songwriter Otis Redding, whose unpolished and achingly expressive vocals exemplify the kind of unaffected soul singing no longer heard in mainstream popular music.
Redding died in 1967, aged 26, and remains best known for his posthumous 1968 US number one hit (Sittin' on the) Dock of the Bay. The series features interviews with guitarist Steve Cropper, trumpeter Wayne Jackson, songwriting partner and soul giant Jerry Butler, and trumpeter Ben Cauley, the sole survivor of the 1967 plane crash that took Redding's life. This edition recalls his distinctive 1966 LP Otis Blue - Otis Redding Sings Soul, featuring the soul gems I've Been Loving You Too Long (to Stop Now), A Change Is Gonna Come and Redding's original version of his song Respect. Plus a look at the singer's Stax/Volt tour of Europe.
Featuring a live session from singer/songwriter Richard Hawley.
