An oboe student before switching gear to record both comedy (the Goons, Flanders and Swann) and jazz (John Dankworth and Cleo Laine), Martin eventually hit his stride with the Beatles. He revolutionised popular music by transforming the guartet's raw rock 'n' roll sound into highly influential polished pop. Those paying tribute include Paul McCartney, Midge Ure, Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, John Williams and Rolf Harris.
