This is final programme in a series where British artists and DJs reflect on the Great British Songbook of each decade from the 1960s to the 2000s. The Great British Songbook is Radio 2's celebration of the work of British songwriters by creating a collection of their finest songs and holding exclusive masterclasses with some of Britain's top lyricists. Frank Renton presents a programme recorded at the 2009 Brass in Concert competition and featuring the winning performance from Fodens, conducted by Gary Cutt.

Brass In Concert is now one of the premier entertainment competitions in the brass band year. In November it was held at the Sage Gateshead with 11 of the top British bands and America's Fountain City Brass Band from America playing for the coveted title.

Tonight's programme is the first of three recorded at the 2009 competition and features the winning performance from Fodens, conducted by Gary Cutt, who take us on a journey to the stars.

Inspired by HG Wells' famous novel, the prog rock and classical album was released in June 1978, and has since spent over 330 weeks in the UK Album Chart and won two Ivor Novello Awards. This multi-media stage version was produced to mark the 30th anniversary of the album's release and was recorded by Radio 2 on 21 June 2009.
