The Scottish Ensemble is directed by Jonathan Morton in a rich variety of string music spanning three centuries.

At the programme's heart is a new piece by John Woolrich, framed by classic works by Mozart and Purcell. Stravinsky's mercurial Concerto of 1946 casts an ironic eye back to the musical past as it extracts every ounce of colour and contrast from the strings. With its disjointed motor rhythms, the music twists and turns, alternately maladroit and elegant, high-spirited and nostalgic.

They are joined by the brilliant Lithuanian-born violinist Julian Rachlin in Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. It was to Tchaikovsky that Stravinsky paid tribute in his Hans Christian Andersen-inspired ballet, The Fairy's Kiss. By contrast, Khachaturian's colourful Soviet-era ballet Spartacus celebrates the Thracian gladiator whose rebel slave army almost defeated the might of Rome.

One of the world's best known musicians, Vladimir Ashkenazy, in conversation with Norman Lebrecht. In a bright, humorous and optimistic 45 minutes, Ashkenazy describes himself as one of the luckiest people alive. He talks about his 'accidental' exile to the West. He describes his recruitment to and subsequent sacking by the KGB, and he considers how he now doesn't play live because of arthritis and misshapen fingers. And he tells Norman he still has one unfulfilled dream: to conduct opera. (Rpt)

Jez Nelson presents another chance to hear a gig performed at the Vortex Jazz Club in London by guitarist Marc Ducret's trio, featuring previously unbroadcast tracks. 

Ducret's virtuosic style first came to prominence when he was a member of New York saxophonist Tim Berne's groups Big Satan and Science Friction. This gig features Ducret's own high-intensity trio with Bruno Chevillon on bass and Eric Echampard on drums. The three have played together for more than ten years and Ducret calls the group 'my laboratory'.

Marc Ducret was born in Paris in 1957. Self-taught, he began playing with dance and folk bands in the mid-1970s, and his career took off after he won the Django Reinhardt Prize in 1987. Ducret is now in high demand on both sides of the Atlantic; his collaborators have included Michel Portal, Miroslav Vitous, Django Bates, Adam Nussbaum and David Sanborn.
