Donald Macleod explores 1891 which, for Tchaikovsky, saw the premiere of Sleeping Beauty as well as the completion of Queen of Spades.

Donald Macleod takes a series of snapshots of a period that lay at the centre of Tchaikovsky's creative life, from 1876 to 1890.

For Tchaikovsky, who was not the most prolific composer, 1890 was an astonishing year. A few days after the premiere of Sleeping Beauty, he set off for Florence, where he completed his opera Queen of Spades at breakneck speed in just 43 days. Donald Macleod dips into the opera and also enjoys Tchaikovsky's other Souvenir of Florence.

Oliver Knussen, the BBC Symphony Orchestra's new artist-in-association, conducts a programme of music which demonstrates perfect mastery of the orchestra by the featured composers. 

With the second part of Respighi's Roman trilogy, there is a dawn-to-dusk tour of the city's most famous fountains. Then there's the first Proms performance of Helen Grime's dramatic evocation of the electric atmosphere before a storm. They are followed by Stravinsky's 1936, ballet Jeu de cartes, a musical poker game in three 'deals', ending with the Joker trounced by a royal flush.

William Ward, an authority on 20th-century Italian politics and culture, talks to historians and musicians to ask if Respighi's famously colourful Fountains of Rome, Pines of Rome and Roman Festivals are just a series of picture postcards designed to please any tourist? Or do they reflect a proto-fascist and fascist agenda?

Illuminating this little-known corner of European cultural history from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, William makes some some surprising discoveries, such as the contrast between Nazi and fascist policy, and the baleful shadow fascism's legacy still casts over contemporary Italian musical life.

Casella's arrangement of it propelled an already virtuosic keyboard piece into even more exotic extremes, using a large orchestra.

Hunt travels to the economist's home town of Kirkaldy, where he is joined by scholar lain 
McLean to examine Smith's life and work, and to Vienna to see how Smith's ideas were adopted and adapted by one of the most influential economic and political thinkers of the 20th century: Friedrich Hayek. Naomi Klein and Anthony Giddens are among the contributors.
