As we approach the final rounds of BBC Radio 3’s Choir of the Year 2008, Aled Jones catches up with the current champions, Chantage and their conductor, James Davey.

After just seven years in existence, Chantage astounded everyone by sweeping the board at the last BBC Radio 3’s Choir of the Year competition.  They walked away with, not only the first prize, but the audience prize as well.  That was back in 2006.  As we approach the climax of BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year 2008, Aled Jones catches up with Chantage conductor, James Davey, to find out what winning the competition has done for their fortunes.  As James points out, the way Chantage was propelled to the front ranks of the choral world has been both a blessing and the burden.  He also reveals what he thought of that ‘other’ competition,  BBC ONE’s Last Choir Standing.

In addition, Matthew and a panel of guests discuss some of the issues which have arisen during the weekend of debates, interviews, dramas and lectures. The 21st Century Brain, the Value of Experience, Privacy and Public Space are the main topics of the festival, in Liverpool for its third year.

He also introduces reaction and commentary from the audience at the festival, highlights from some of the events and reflections from his studio panel to the new ideas which have been aired as well as the intellectual exchanges that have taken place over the weekend.

'Seven Ages of Man': a special edition recorded live at Radio 3's Free Thinking Festival.

A special edition recorded live at Radio 3's Free Thinking Festival in Liverpool.  Annabelle Dowler and Kevin Harvey read poetry, prose and drama inspired by Shakespeare's 'Seven Ages of Man'.

Experience the journey of a lifetime in an hour-and-a-half with young Liverpudlian actors Annabelle Dowler and Kevin Harvey, and music performed by folk-singer Belinda Sykes, jazz/rock-percussionist Bill Bruford, pianist Ashley Wass and the Elias String Quartet!  

This edition of Words and Music is an interpretation of Shakespeare’s declaration about life, the ‘Seven Ages of Man’ from As You Like It, through the words of Blake and the Mersey Sound; Marlowe and Raleigh, Sassoon and Pinter; Pam Ayres and Kipling.  Plus, Don’t Fence Me In, a newly-commissioned take on Shakespeare’s ‘Second Childishness’ by Free Thinking Writer in Residence, Angela Clarke.  

Bill Bruford plays percussion improvisations that represent the passing of time, while Belinda Sykes punctuates the programme with folk ballades that convey the raw experience of life.   Ashley Wass and the Elias String Quartet play music that ties in with youth, from Mendelssohn’s String Quartet Op.44 No.2 to Grieg’s Arietta, and from Debussy’s String Quartet to Kurtag’s Jatekok nursery rhythms.  They come together for the ‘Lover’ in the Adagio from Elgar’s Quintet and, as old age approaches, play from Haydn’s String Quartet Op.76 No.1 and Bax’s In a Vodka Shop to represent Shakespeare’s ‘Slippered Pantaloon’ and ‘Second Childishness’.   Ashley Wass brings the programme to a close with more Grieg, his ‘Recollection’, which is followed by Kipling’s ‘The Way through the Woods’ and Bill Bruford’s percussion beat fading as life comes to a close.

The Seven Ages of Man. As part of the Free Thinking festival, a special live event from 
St George's small concert room in Liverpool, where Dickens gave his famous Penny Readings. Liverpudlian actors Annabelle Dowler and Kevin Harvey read a selection of poetry, prose and drama on the theme of the Seven Ages of Man. They are joined by pianist Ashley Wass , the Elias Quartet , folk singer Belinda Sykes , and rock and jazz percussionist Bill Bruford , who perform everything from the Mersey Sound to Kipling, folk ballads to Bartok, and percussion improvisations to Bach, including a newly commissioned work by Liverpudlian writer Angela Clarke. Julian Joseph presents the programme with gig news refelecting the vibrant UK jazz scene and the latest mix of new releases. 

Featuring an interview with double bassist Michael Janisch, a prominent new exponent of electric and acoustic bass. An alumnus of Boston's Berklee College of Music, he has studied privately and institutionally with some of the world's top bassists, including Ray Brown, Christian McBride, Abraham Laboriel, Bertrum Turetzsky and Dave Santoro. Still in his twenties, Michael has had the honour of being awarded the 2008 Young Jazz Musician of the Year Award, and he is a professor of acoustic jazz bass at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
