In the last of this week's concerts recorded at the Sage Gateshead, pianist Freddy Kempf performs works in keeping with the Russian Romantic repertoire. Musorgsky's magnum opus Pictures at an Exhibition begins the recital, followed by a little-known work by Glinka - Privet Otchizne. He ends with what is arguably the hardest piece in the keyboard oeuvre - Balakirev's Islamey.
