1/5. The Austrian composer Erich Korngold was born in Brunn (now Brno in the Czech Republic) and began composing at the age of six. A piano sonata written when he was 11 impressed Gustav Mahler, and his works were praised by Strauss, Humperdinck, and the conductor Artur Nikisch.
