Charpentier and the Reign of Louis XIV

Catherine Bott marks the tercentenary of the death of Marc-Antoine Charpentier on 24 February 1704 with a selection of music by him and his contemporaries, active during the reign of Louis XIV of France. The performances were recorded in February in various locations in Europe as part of the European Broadcasting Union's Charpentier Day. concludes tomorrow

Verdi's opera tells the story of the Babylonian king who conquered Jerusalem in 586 BC and of the Hebrews' road from oppression to freedom. When the opera was performed in the 1840s, the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves (Va Pensiero) was adopted in Austrian-occupied Italy as a surrogate national anthem. Presented by Stephanie Hughes.
