Charpentier and the Reign of Louis XIV

Verdi's opera tells the story of the Babylonian king who conquered Jerusalem in 586 BC and of the Hebrews' road from oppression to freedom. When the opera was performed in the 1840s, the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves (Va Pensiero) was adopted in Austrian-occupied Italy as a surrogate national anthem. Presented by Stephanie Hughes.
