By John Arden. Based on the Memoirs and Confessions of Captain Ashe, John Arden 's new play charts the picaresque journey of a gentleman vagabond Irishman over three continents, searching for "the main chance". From his early days among the impoverished Irish gentry in 1787 to his exile in France in 1815, Thomas Ashe experiences life as clerk, tradesman, teacher, plagiarist, sailor, murderer, embezzler, impersonator, explorer, political propagandist, hackjournalist, blackmailer, writer, lover, and soldier in the Napoleonic Wars. Until eventually he has to confront the full force of the government's wrath.
