4: Berlioz the Symphonist
Donald Macleod and Berlioz expert David Cairns considerthe artistic viewpoint from which Berlioz approached the symphony. He saw it as a form of drama which could equal any of Shakespeare's. His scale of vision and ideas about orchestration were ahead of his time, and his earliest symphonic work, the Symphonie
Fantastique, which was produced in 1830, had an electrifying effect on the audience, who had never heard anything like it before. Harold in Italy followed in 1834, inspired by Byron's dramatic poem Childe Harold 's Pilgrimage and Berlioz's own memories of happytimes spent in the Abruzzi mountains outside Rome. Like Beethoven before him, Berlioz's innovations challenged the way in which symphonic music was regarded.

Archive Week
Stephen Johnson presents another concert from the BBC Archives, as voted for by Radio 3 listeners. Thomas Beecham was one of the greatest Berlioz champions, and his Royal Albert Hall performance of the immense Grande Messe des Morts from 1959 reveals the work as a magnificent Romantic vision, rather than the inflated monsterpiece it is often reputed to be.
