By the 1680s Charpentier was firmly established as a successful composer in the French theatre. Although illness robbed him of the chance of an appointment at court it did not stop him from furthering his career by writing music for the funeral services following the death of the Infanta of Spain and Queen of France,

Today's programme comes live from the opening day of the City of London Festival. The venue is the sumptuous Livery Hall of the Worshipful Company of Drapers, where Sean Rafferty is joined by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Christopher Warren-Green. Guests from the festival programme include pianist Melvyn Tan playing Mozart and oboist Nick Daniel. And for Architecture Week there is an opportunity to hear about some of the contemporary buildings in the vicinity.
