La Folia. Lucie Skeaping finds out why dance which originated in Portugal in the late 15th century has inspired so many composers. The name literally means mad or empty headed, and until the late 1670s the dance was very wild and noisy.
Composers such as Vivaldi, Marais and CPE Bach later began to use the tune as a basis for more sedate music, though still retaining the unique character of the dance.

With contributions from critics, cultural commentators and performers, and from Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau himself.
