4: Where Is the Life That Late I Led?
The early 1940s found the songwriter as busy as ever with film scores and a series of commercial successes on Broadway. But fashions in musical theatre began to change, and by the middle of the decade Porter seemed to have lost his way. Then, in 1948, he confounded the critics who said he was "written out" with a masterpiece - Kiss Me Kate. Paul Guinery tells the story of this troubled but decisive decade in Porter's life and plays some vintage recordings. Discs Repeated next Thursday 11.30pm

Die Kathrin
To celebrate the centenary of Korngold's birth, Brendan Carroll introduces the first recording of his last opera. It is a sentimental love story set against a colourful panorama of soldiers, students, nightclub singers and melodramatic villains. Never far from the world of operetta, Die Kathrin displays the same melodic gift that made Korngold one of the first great film composers.

James Salter has combined two extraordinary careers. As an air force pilot he flew over 100 combat missions during the Korean War, and as a novelist he has won the admiration of fellow writers from
Susan Sontag to Joseph Heller.
Hermione Lee discusses Salter's life and writing in the light of his memoirs, Burning the Days. And as playwright Christopher Fry prepares to celebrate his 90th birthday, she explores with him the belief that
"poetry is the language in which man explores his own amazement." Producer Abigail Appleton

4: In Realms of Magic. With Rodney Milnes. Fantasy and fairy tale have always been part of opera and Massenet mined this particular vein with profit, as is demonstrated by his Cinderella opera Cendrillon, his picaresque Byzantine fantasy
Esclarmonde, and his very personal approach to the story of Cleopatra. Discs Repeated from last Thursday
