Poet Heinrich Heine was born 200 years ago this week in Germany, during a period of great European upheaval, and died as an exile in Paris. He is best remembered today through the settings of his poems by Schubert and Schumann, and his evocation of the Lorelei, the siren of the Rhine. But Heine's work and life were far richer than this. His writings included great lyrical poetry, travelogues, satires and critical journalistic portraits of the conditions of his day and age. In 1827, he visited London and saw Edmund Kean as Shylock, a character symbolising for Heine his independence and Jewish identity. Russell Davies follows the fortunes of a modernist.

Jeremy Summerly is joined by Richard Langham Smith to introduce the final choral works to be composed by Poulenc and Hindmith, before their deaths in 1963. The programme concludes with Alfred Desenclos 's setting of the Requiem, also written in 1963. Despite a considerable list of works, Desenclos remains relatively unknown among the French composers of his generation. Manx Music
Thanks to Dr Clague. Bob Carswell 's two-part survey of Manx traditional music starts with the story of The
National Song Book, a collection of traditional tunes compiled strictly in accordance with Victorian tastes.
With its new English lyrics, it is now seen as something of a mixed blessing in the history of Manx music. Producer Nick St George
