2: Telling the Story
Sacred legends such as the Ramayana and the tales of Krishna and the milkmaids are told through the medium of dance, drama and recitation in the temples of Kerala, southern India, and in the northern temples of Mathura and Vrindaban as well as in rural Bengal. In Rajasthan, the epic of Pabuji is performed by a singing, dancing violinist, while in Sindh, in present-day Pakistan, the Islamic story of the Sohni is a metaphor for the soul's spiritual journey.
