Billy Budd
The second of this week's operas by Benjamin Britten , introduced by Humphrey Carpenter.
Britten's nautical opera made its maiden voyage at Covent Garden in 1951. Now it embarks on a return sailing in a new production from Geneva by Francesca Zambello. Billy Budd is a youthful and naïve sailor who is eventually condemned to be hanged from the yard-arm for the murder of his ship's master-at-arms - but only when provoked by a malicious accusation of mutiny. Britten was attracted to this story with its undercurrents of homosexuality and sub-theme of innocence driven to desperation by an uncaring and corrupt society.
