Here is a tenor who never shouts, but whose singing is always delightful and sensitive to the ear.
That is how
Tito Schipa 's records were advertised in the 1930s and, as John Steane demonstrates, it is how they sound to this day. With the help of songs as well as operatic excerpts, he traces the long career of the famous tenor, from his debut in 1910 right up to the time of his farewell concert in New York at the age of 73. (Tito Schipa can also be heard in next Saturday 's broadcast of 'Don Pasquole' recorded in 1932)
